Clocks Fall Back Nov. 1: Planning Twilight and Winter Listing Shoots in San Diego
Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, and sunset in San Diego jumps from about 6 p.m. to just before 5 p.m. Here's how that changes twilight shoots, daytime scheduling and holiday-season listings.

Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 1, 2026, when clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. For most people that means an extra hour of sleep. For anyone listing a home in San Diego, it means the light changes overnight, and so does the best way to schedule a shoot.
Here's what changes, and how we plan twilight and daytime shoots through the winter months.
Sunset moves an hour earlier overnight
On Saturday, October 31, the sun sets in coastal North County at about 5:58 p.m. On Sunday, November 1, it sets at about 4:57 p.m. From there it keeps creeping earlier:
- Mid-November: sunset around 4:47 p.m.
- Late November to early December: the earliest sunsets of the year, around 4:41 p.m.
- Winter solstice (December 21): around 4:46 p.m. Evenings are already getting a little longer by then, though mornings keep getting darker into early January.
- Mid-January: back to about 5:04 p.m.
Times are approximate for the Carlsbad area. Inland and South Bay times differ by a minute or two.
Twilight shoots now happen around 5 p.m.
A real twilight session is timed to the sun, not the clock. We arrive before sunset to set up and turn on every light, then shoot the exterior through the short window when the sky glows and the house is lit from inside. Through the winter, that window falls between roughly 4:40 and 5:15 p.m.
A few things help this go smoothly:
- Have the home ready by about 4 p.m. Lights, lamps, landscape lighting, pool and spa lights, fire features and TVs off.
- Combine twilight with the daytime shoot. If we're shooting interiors the same day, starting in the early afternoon lets us finish inside in good light and move outside for sunset.
- Let sellers know the plan. A twilight session runs into dinnertime in winter, so it helps if the household expects it.

Shorter days, tighter daytime windows
Interiors can be shot any time of day. Exteriors and drone are a different story. Winter sun sits lower in the sky, which means longer shadows and less time when the front of a home is evenly lit. We look at which way each home faces before we schedule. West-facing homes usually look best in the afternoon, and east-facing homes in the morning.
Morning shoots also start a little later now. Sunrise moves from about 6:08 a.m. on November 1 to nearly 6:50 a.m. by late December.
Short on time? Digital twilights
If the seller can't be home at dusk or the calendar is tight, digital twilights turn daytime exterior photos into evening images in editing. They start at $95 for two, need no second visit, and are included in our Radiate Stay package. For luxury and view homes, a real twilight session still gives the most natural result.
Rain, clouds and winter skies
Winter is San Diego's rainy season, but most days are still clear, and the air after a storm is often the cleanest of the year. We replace the sky on every exterior photo, so a gray morning doesn't mean a gray listing. If heavy rain is in the forecast, we can shoot interiors as planned and come back for exteriors and drone on the next dry day.
Listing during the holidays
Listing photos often stay online well into the new year, so keep holiday décor light. A wreath and a bit of greenery look warm. A full tree, inflatables and stockings can date the photos by January. If the home is already decorated, consider shooting before the decorations go up, or keep them to one or two rooms.
And a lit home at dusk is one of the most eye-catching images in a winter feed, when buyers are scrolling listings after dark. It's a good season to add a twilight.
