Who Owns the Media? Re-Licensing Explained
When you book a shoot, you're purchasing a license to use the media, not the media itself. Here's what that means and when a re-license is needed.
How licensing works
Your license lets you market a specific property under your name or your brokerage. As is standard under copyright law, Radiate keeps full ownership of the photos and videos we produce, so the license covers only the use it was issued for. If that changes, for example the home is relisted with another agent or the media is used in a new way, a re-license is required.
Why isn't a license transferable?
Licenses are issued to one agent or company for a single listing. The content can't be reused, transferred or shared with another party, whether that's a different agent, a builder, a vacation rental host or another company. If someone else would like to use it, we're happy to work with them directly on a license that fits.
Common reasons to re-license
- The listing moves to a new agent or brokerage
- The property comes off the market and is relisted
- The media will be used for a different purpose, such as an Airbnb or vacation rental listing, a builder or designer portfolio, long-term rental marketing, or promotion beyond the original listing
What does it cost?
Re-licensing costs much less than a new shoot. Pricing depends on how the media will be used, where it's distributed and who will use it. Send us the details and we'll reply with a quick quote.
